GIMP

Many consider GIMP the best free graphic application for Macintosh, some consider it almost a competitor of the great Adobe Photoshop. Maybe making this kind of comparison is quite difficult (especially with a software that has done the story of Mac), but GIMP has anyway many very good features (just look at some screenshots in the GIMP homepage).

There are a lot of filters and plugins to choose from.

Needs X11.app of  Apple to run.

Seashore
Seashore is an open source image editor. It features gradients, textures and anti-aliasing for both text and brush strokes. It supports multiple layers and alpha channel editing. It is based around the GIMP's technology and uses the same native file format.

However, unlike the GIMP, Seashore only aims to serve the basic image editing needs of most computer users, not to provide a replacement for professional image editing products.
